This decal sheet presents an assortment of celestial motifs drawn in the style of antique astronomical engraving, with dense black linework and cross-hatching on a white ground. Several sun faces anchor the collection, each with a human face at the center of radiating rays that range from broad wavy points to tight geometric spikes, and no two alike. A compass rose, a gear-ringed solar disc, and a small radiant sunburst add further solar variations. Two armillary spheres appear, one as a freestanding ringed orb and one mounted on a pedestal stand. An ouroboros snake looped into a circle frames a triangle enclosing a radiant sun face, a circular celestial chart is packed with smaller astronomical symbols, and a crescent moon cradles a human profile. The stippling and layered linework give every motif the look of a period star-atlas plate.
These are water-slide transfer decals applied to the surface of already-fused glass rather than sandwiched between glass layers, so they work with any COE glass. Cut a decal from the sheet, soak it briefly in clean water until it releases from its backing, slide it onto clean pre-fired glass, press out water and air with a soft squeegee, and let the piece dry fully before placing it in the kiln.
What glass can I use these decals on? Because these decals fire onto the surface of already-completed glass rather than fusing between compatible layers, COE is not a limiting factor. Apply them to any glass that has already been fused and annealed.
How do I apply a water-slide decal? Cut the individual decal from the sheet, soak it in clean, room-temperature water for roughly 20 to 30 seconds until it slides freely off its backing, position it on a clean, dry, pre-fired glass surface, then press out trapped water and air with a soft squeegee or fingertip from the center outward. Let the piece dry completely before loading it into the kiln.
Can I save the rest of the sheet for later? Yes. Cut only the decals you plan to use and store the remaining sheet flat in a dry place away from direct light and humidity for future firings.
Do these decals have a metallic finish? No. The astronomy designs are printed in solid black linework, so they fire toward the lower end of the range.
Specifications
SKU: 154399 Sold as a single printed water-slide decal sheet Assorted antique-engraving celestial motifs in black linework Non-metallic: fires toward the lower end of the range Compatible with any COE glass (applied to a pre-fired surface) Sheet size: 5.25 x 4 inches Working Notes
Apply decals only to glass that has already been fused and is completely clean. Residual oils, fingerprints, or kiln wash on the surface will interfere with adhesion. Test on a small scrap piece from your batch before committing to a finished work, since results vary with your kiln and glass.
Suggested Firing Schedule (a starting point only, not a guarantee of results): This is a single-color decal, so fire toward the lower end of its range to keep the image dense. Ventilate the kiln well up to 1000 degrees F and fire slowly below 500 degrees F. Every kiln fires differently, so test a small piece first and anneal for the thickness of your glass. 50 degrees per hour to 185 degrees F, hold 20 min. 150 degrees per hour to 300 degrees F, hold 15 min. 250 degrees per hour to 500 degrees F, hold 15 min. 600 degrees per hour to 1000 degrees F, hold 10 min. Then to 1240 to 1370 degrees F, hold about 10 min. Anneal for the thickness of your glass.
