COE90 dichroic glass carries a thin metallic coating that shifts color as the light and the viewing angle change. This section brings together our COE90 dichroic in every form, from patterned and solid CBS sheets to frit, noodles, and stringers, so you can add that signature shimmer to fused glass, jewelry, and kiln-formed work.

What dichroic glass is

Dichroic glass is made by depositing ultra-thin layers of metal oxides onto a base glass. Those layers reflect some wavelengths of light and pass others, so the glass shows one color in reflection and often a different color in transmission, shifting as the piece moves. The coating is on one side of the glass. The effect has its roots in optical coatings developed for aerospace, and today it is one of the most popular ways to add color and movement to fused glass.

Choose the correct COE

Everything in this section is COE90, or coefficient of expansion 90. Use COE90 dichroic with compatible COE90 glass so the pieces expand and contract together in the kiln. If you work in the other system, see our dichroic glass in the matching COE.

Firing notes

Dichroic results vary with the kiln, firing schedule, base glass, capping, and coating orientation. Many artists cap dichroic with clear to protect the coating and deepen the effect. These are guidelines, not guarantees, so test a small piece first when the final look matters.

Uses for COE90 dichroic glass

COE90 dichroic is used in fused glass, jewelry, cabochons, pendants, dishes, accents, and decorative panels, anywhere you want reflective color and a sense of movement.
