Dichroic glass carries an ultra thin metallic coating that reflects one color and transmits another, so the glass appears to change color as the light and viewing angle change. This category gathers the COE90 dichroic range at Art Glass Supplies, almost all of it from Coatings By Sandberg (CBS), the California coater whose name is synonymous with dichroic for fusing.
CBS Dichroic Patterned sheets carry the color-shift coating in geometric and textured designs over black or clear glass, while CBS Dichroic Solid Color sheets deliver full-coverage color for backgrounds, cabochons, and bold accents. Beyond sheet, Dichroic Frit adds sparkle to castings and pattern work, Dichroic Noodles, Stix, and Stringers draw fine shimmering lines, and Dichroic Scrap offers assorted offcuts for jewelry-scale projects.
Black-based dichroic shows the reflected color at full saturation, while clear-based dichroic lets light through for a more transparent, two-tone effect. Solid colors are the easy starting point for cabochons and pendants, and patterned sheets deliver a finished-looking design from a single layer. Everything here is COE90, so pair it with Bullseye and other COE90 compatible glass and keep COE96 out of the same piece.
Results vary with the kiln, schedule, base glass, and whether the coated side faces up or is capped. Many artists cap dichroic with clear glass to protect the coating and deepen the color shift, though uncapped and tack-fused approaches also work depending on the project. Test a small piece first when the final look matters.
