Birds Decals Sheet

This sheet holds fifteen individual bird illustrations. Most are printed in warm amber, gold, and orange tones, while a few are rendered in black and white, so the sheet reads as a warm collection with a couple of high-contrast accents. The designs span a broad range of birds: several owls with distinct silhouettes, a long-billed wading heron, a boldly marked woodpecker, a pelican, a peacock, a full-tailed rooster, a stepping ground bird, and an assortment of perching songbirds. The birds are arranged in rows across the sheet, and the varied species give you a versatile set of accents to distribute across multiple pieces.

These are water-slide fusible glass decals designed for application on top of pre-fired glass. The decal fires onto the glass surface rather than fusing as a compatible glass layer, which means they work with any COE. To apply, soak a trimmed decal briefly in clean water until it releases from the paper backing, slide it into position on clean pre-fired glass, smooth out any trapped water and bubbles with a soft squeegee or flat tool, and allow the piece to dry completely before loading the kiln. Once fired, the design bonds permanently to the glass surface.

Can these decals be used with any COE glass?
Yes. Because fusible decals fire onto the glass surface rather than fusing as a glass-compatible layer, they are not COE-specific. The base glass must be pre-fired and thoroughly clean before you apply the decal.

What birds are on this sheet?
The sheet shows fifteen bird designs, including multiple owls, a wading heron, a woodpecker, a pelican, a peacock, a rooster, and several perching songbirds. Most are printed in warm amber and gold, with a few in black and white for contrast.

Do I need special tools to apply these decals?

Can I use these on curved or slumped pieces?
Yes, as long as the glass was pre-fired before you apply the decal. Apply the decal to the cooled, fired piece, smooth it flat, let it dry, then re-fire. The wet film is flexible enough to conform to gentle curves.

Working Notes

Apply these decals only to clean, pre-fired glass that is free of dust, oils, and fingerprints. Allow the decal to dry completely before placing the piece in the kiln. This print fires in the 1240 to 1370 degree range, kept toward the lower end to preserve density.

Suggested Firing Schedule (a suggested starting point, not a guarantee of results):
On fused glass this print fires to a final range of 1240 to 1370 degrees, held about 10 minutes and kept toward the lower end to preserve density. Ventilate the kiln well up to 1000 degrees and fire slowly below 500 degrees.
50 degrees per hour to 185 degrees, hold 20 min.
150 degrees per hour to 300 degrees, hold 15 min.
250 degrees per hour to 500 degrees, hold 15 min.
600 degrees per hour to 1000 degrees, hold 10 min.
Then to 1240 to 1370 degrees, hold about 10 min.
Anneal for the thickness of your glass. Every kiln fires differently, so test a small sample piece before committing a finished work.
