Birds on a Wire Decals Sheet

This sheet is filled with black bird silhouettes arranged in a variety of poses. Every motif is rendered in solid black in a clean graphic style with no color fills or shading. The designs vary in subject and composition: single round-bodied songbirds perched alone on horizontal wires, pairs and small clusters of birds lined up side by side on wires, birds resting on bare twigs, and birds settled on slender branches with blossoming sprays. One elongated long-tailed bird, distinct from the more compact songbird shapes, appears among the motifs. These are water-slide fusible glass decals designed to be applied and fired onto the surface of pre-fired glass. Soak each decal briefly in room-temperature water until it slides freely from its backing, position it on your clean and fully dried glass piece, smooth out any trapped water and air with a soft tool, and allow the decal to dry completely before loading the kiln. Because the decals bond to the glass surface rather than fusing as a compatible glass layer, they work with any COE glass you already use in your studio.

Can I separate the individual decals and use them on different projects?
Yes. Use scissors to cut between the motifs and separate them from the sheet. Each decal can then be placed independently on a different piece, or you can combine several designs on one panel.

Working Notes

Apply decals to clean, pre-fired, fully annealed glass only. After soaking, position the decal carefully since repositioning disturbs the film. Work from the center outward with a soft squeegee or fingertip to remove water and air pockets, then let the piece sit undisturbed until completely dry before firing. All fusing and slumping should be completed before the decal firing. Test a small piece in your own kiln before committing a full project, as every kiln fires differently.

Suggested Firing Schedule (a suggested starting point, not a guarantee of results):
On fused glass this single-color print fires to a final range of 1240 to 1370 degrees, held about 10 minutes and kept toward the lower end to preserve density. Ventilate the kiln well up to 1000 degrees and fire slowly below 500 degrees.
50 degrees per hour to 185 degrees, hold 20 minutes
150 degrees per hour to 300 degrees, hold 15 minutes
250 degrees per hour to 500 degrees, hold 15 minutes
600 degrees per hour to 1000 degrees, hold 10 minutes
Then to 1240 to 1370 degrees, hold about 10 minutes
Anneal for the thickness of your glass. Every kiln fires differently, so test a small piece before committing a finished project.
