This water-slide decal sheet carries an assortment of retro audio-equipment designs printed in warm metallic tones that shift from gold to orange across the sheet. The lineup covers classic portable audio gear: boxy boom boxes with speaker grilles and antennas, over-ear headphones, flat cassette tapes, vintage microphones, a record turntable, an old gramophone horn, a VU meter, and a DJ mixer deck. The mix of sizes gives you accent-scale pieces for jewelry components, small tiles, and layered panel work.
These are water-slide transfers made for use on pre-fired glass. Soak a cut decal in water, slide it off the backing onto a clean, dry glass surface, smooth out trapped water and air with a soft squeegee or fingertip, let it dry completely, and fire. Because the decal bonds to the surface of an already-fused piece rather than fusing as a compatible glass layer, it works with any COE glass in your studio.
What glass can I use with these decals? Any COE. Fusible decals are fired onto the surface of glass that has already been fused, so there is no coefficient-of-expansion match to worry about. The base piece only needs to be fully fired and clean before you apply the decal.
How do I apply a water-slide decal to glass? Cut the design from the sheet and soak it in room-temperature water for about 30 seconds until it moves freely on its paper backing. Slide it onto clean, dry, pre-fired glass, then remove the backing. Work from the center outward with a soft squeegee or fingertip to push out water and air, and let the piece dry fully before loading the kiln.
Can I cut the designs apart and use them separately? Yes. Trim the individual designs from the sheet with scissors before soaking so you can place them one at a time or group several on a single piece. Store the unused portion flat and dry for later projects.
Do I need to anneal after a decal firing? Yes. Anneal for the thickness of your glass after the decal firing, just as you would for any kiln project. Applying a decal does not change the annealing requirement for the base glass.
Specifications
SKU: 153432 Sold as a single printed water-slide decal sheet Assorted retro audio-equipment designs in warm gold-to-orange metallic tones Single-tone metallic finish, fired toward the lower end of the range to keep it dense Compatible with any COE glass (applied to a pre-fired surface) Sheet size: 5.25 x 4 inches Working Notes
Apply decals only to glass that has already been fired and is clean and free of oils or fingerprints. Any moisture left beneath the decal can cause lifting or bubbling during the firing, so let the piece dry fully at room temperature before you begin the ramp. Handle wet decals gently, as stretching distorts the printed design. Because the decal is not a fusing-compatible glass layer, no COE matching is needed.
Suggested Firing Schedule (a suggested starting point only, not a guarantee of results; every kiln fires differently, so test a small piece first and anneal for the thickness of your glass): Firing range 1240 to 1370 degrees F, kept toward the lower end to keep the color dense. Ventilate the kiln well up to 1000 degrees and fire slowly below 500 degrees. 50 degrees per hour to 185 degrees, hold 20 minutes. 150 degrees per hour to 300 degrees, hold 15 minutes. 250 degrees per hour to 500 degrees, hold 15 minutes. 600 degrees per hour to 1000 degrees, hold 10 minutes. Then to 1240 to 1370 degrees, hold about 10 minutes. Anneal for the thickness of your glass.
