Working Notes

These are guidelines, not guarantees. Every kiln fires a little differently, so test a small run first when the result matters and follow a casting schedule suited to your glass and kiln.

• Prime both cavities before every use with ZYP Boron Nitride Mold Primer or Hotline Primo Primer, and let the primer dry completely before adding glass so the castings release cleanly.
• Colour de Verre recommends filling with casting rocks or billet chunks rather than fine frit to bring out facial detail. Coarser glass tends to produce better surface definition in detailed molds.
• Fill the smaller face cavity with about 175 grams of glass and the larger face cavity with about 225 grams.
• For an added glow effect, fuse a piece of dichroic sheet glass to the back of a finished casting after the initial firing.
• The mold is COE agnostic. Match your firing schedule to your glass type and adjust the anneal soak accordingly.
• Let the kiln cool fully before removing the castings. Re-prime the mold before each subsequent firing.

Colour de Verre Suggested Firing Schedule

This is a suggested starting schedule based on Colour de Verre general guidance, not a guarantee. Every kiln fires differently. Follow the Colour de Verre project sheet for this mold and test a small run first.

• Heat no faster than about 350 F (195 C) per hour through the early stages to allow even heat distribution through the glass fill.
• Fire to a maximum of about 1450 F (785 C). Do not exceed this temperature.
• Hold briefly at peak temperature, then begin a controlled cool toward the anneal range.
• Anneal soak: approximately 950 F for COE96, or approximately 900 F for COE90. Hold for a soak period appropriate for the thickness of your castings, then cool slowly to room temperature.
