Butterflies Decal Sheet

This Butterflies Decal Sheet carries an assortment of butterfly and moth motifs. Most of the designs are printed in metallic copper and gold foil, while several toward the lower rows appear in black and white with finely detailed wing patterning, including a pair of boldly striped zebra-pattern moths. The forms vary across the set: broad rounded butterfly wings, compact swallowtail shapes, and elongated moth wings with layered markings. The result is a naturalistic collection that reads as a set of specimens when fired onto glass.

Each decal is a water-slide transfer applied to pre-fired glass. Because the decal fires onto the glass surface rather than fusing as a compatible glass layer, this sheet works with any COE glass. Soak the decal in water until it slides freely from its backing, position it on clean pre-fired glass, smooth out water and air bubbles, allow it to dry fully, then fire according to the schedule below. The result is a crisp, permanent design bonded to the glass surface.

What is on the sheet?

Will these decals work with the COE glass I already have?
Yes. Because the decal fires onto the surface of pre-fired glass rather than fusing as a compatible glass layer, it is compatible with any COE glass. Clean, pre-fired glass is the key requirement, not a specific COE match.

Do the metallic decals require a different firing approach?
No. These are single-color and metallic-foil prints that fire to 1240 to 1370 degrees, held toward the lower end of that range to keep the metallic and the fine detail crisp. See the Working Notes below for the complete suggested schedule.

Can these decals be applied to slumped or cast pieces?
Yes, provided the piece has already been fired and has a smooth, clean surface. Slumped pieces qualify as long as they are pre-fired and thoroughly cleaned before the decal is positioned and dried.

Working Notes

Soak each decal in water until it releases from its backing, then slide it onto clean, pre-fired glass. Smooth out water and air bubbles with a soft squeegee or fingertip, working from the center outward. Allow the piece to dry completely before loading the kiln. For the metallic foil designs, target the lower portion of the firing range to keep the finish dense.

Suggested Firing Schedule (the manufacturer's recommendation, a starting point only): Firing range is roughly 1240 to 1370 degrees F; these designs fire toward the lower end to preserve density. This is a suggested starting point, not a guarantee of results. Every kiln fires differently, so test a small piece first and anneal for the thickness of your glass. Ventilate the kiln well up to 1000 degrees and fire slowly below 500 degrees.
50 DPH to 185 degrees F, HOLD/SOAK 20 min.
150 DPH to 300 degrees F, HOLD/SOAK 15 min.
250 DPH to 500 degrees F, HOLD/SOAK 15 min.
600 DPH to 1000 degrees F, HOLD/SOAK 10 min.
Then to 1240 to 1370 degrees F, HOLD/SOAK 10 min.
Anneal for the thickness of the glass.
