Butterfly Texture Fusing Tile

The Butterfly Texture Fusing Tile from Creative Paradise is a 10 inch square ceramic tile that transfers a butterfly pattern across a full fused glass piece. Lay a double layer of sheet glass on the prepared tile surface, add frit for color or surface variation, then fire to full fuse. The glass flows into the butterfly texture and picks up the pattern across the surface. The tile measures 10 inches by 10 inches, with a diagonal of 14.5 inches.

Like all ceramic kiln molds, this tile is COE agnostic. Use it with COE96, COE90, or any compatible fusible glass, matching the firing schedule to your glass. The tile is reusable across many firings when prepped and cared for properly.

What does the Butterfly Texture Fusing Tile make?
It transfers a butterfly texture onto a fused glass piece. Place a double layer of sheet glass on the prepared tile, fire to full fuse, and the glass takes on the butterfly surface pattern from the tile.

What COE glass can I use with this tile?
Any COE. Ceramic kiln molds are COE agnostic, so the same tile works with COE96, COE90, or other fusible glass. Match your firing schedule to the glass you are using.

Do I need to add frit?
Frit is optional. Creative Paradise suggests a double layer of glass with frit on top. Adding frit lets you introduce color or surface variation across the textured piece.

How do I prep the tile before firing?
Coat the tile surface with a kiln shelf primer such as a boron nitride spray or a kiln wash such as Hotline Primo Primer, and let it dry completely before placing glass so the glass does not stick to the tile.

Working Notes

These are guidelines, not guarantees. Every kiln fires a little differently, so test a small run first when the result matters and follow a schedule suited to your glass and kiln.

• Prime the tile surface with a boron nitride mold primer such as ZYP Boron Nitride Mold Primer, or a kiln wash, and let it dry completely before placing glass so the glass does not stick.
• Place a double layer of sheet glass on the prepared tile. Add frit on top for color or surface variation across the finished piece.
• The tile is COE agnostic. Use a full fuse schedule matched to your glass, adjusting the final anneal soak for your COE.
• Let the kiln cool fully before removing the textured piece. Re-coat the tile with primer as needed between firings.
• The Slide Hi Temp brand separator is not recommended with these molds.

Creative Paradise Suggested Firing Schedule

This is a suggested COE96 starting schedule, not a guarantee. Every kiln fires differently. Test a small run and adjust the schedule for your glass and kiln.

Full Fuse (COE96): suggested for a double layer of glass with frit.

*Segment 4 is the anneal soak at 950 F for COE96. If using COE90, adjust this temperature to 900 F.
