The Conch mold from Colour de Verre casts one conch shell in a single firing. The finished piece measures about 3 inches and works as a shell paperweight, a bathroom shelf accent, or a decorative piece arranged alongside other sea-themed castings such as starfish, sea snails, and scallops.
Like all ceramic casting molds, this one is COE agnostic. Fill the cavity with frit or crushed glass and fire so the glass takes the shape of the shell. Colour de Verre lists a fill weight of about 110 grams. The mold is reusable across many firings when primed and cared for properly.
What does the Conch mold make? It casts one conch shell, about 3 inches, suited to display as a paperweight or shelf accent piece.
What COE glass can I use in this mold? Any COE. Ceramic casting molds are COE agnostic, so the same mold works with COE96, COE90, or other fusible glass. Match your firing schedule to the glass you are using.
How much glass do I need? Colour de Verre lists about 110 grams of frit per cavity. Weigh your glass and test a first run when the result matters.
How do I prep the mold before casting? Prime the cavity before every use with a boron nitride mold primer and let it dry completely before adding glass. Colour de Verre recommends ZYP BN Lubricoat or Hotline Primo Primer specifically.

Working Notes
These are guidelines, not guarantees. Every kiln fires a little differently, so test a small run first when the result matters and follow the Colour de Verre project sheet for this mold.
Prime the cavity before every use with ZYP Boron Nitride Mold Primer or Hotline Primo Primer and let it dry completely before adding glass so the cast piece releases cleanly.
Fill the cavity with frit or crushed glass. Colour de Verre lists about 110 grams per cavity. Weigh your glass for consistent results.
The mold is COE agnostic. Use a full fuse schedule matched to your glass and adjust the final anneal soak for your COE.
Let the kiln cool fully before removing the cast piece. Re coat the mold with primer before each subsequent firing.
Colour de Verre Suggested Firing Schedule
This is a suggested starting schedule, not a guarantee. Every kiln fires differently. Follow the Colour de Verre project sheet for this mold and test a small run first before committing to a production run.
Heat no faster than about 350 F (195 C) per hour to avoid thermal shock to the mold.
Fire to no more than about 1450 F (785 C).
Add a controlled cool with an anneal soak suited to your glass: about 900 F for COE90, or about 950 F for COE96.
