Dinosaur Skeltons Decal Sheet

This sheet holds nine prehistoric skeleton illustrations printed in fine black line art on a white field. The collection covers a broad range of species: two long-bodied marine reptiles with flipper-like limbs shown in full lateral view, a long-necked sauropod, a Stegosaurus with its distinctive back plates clearly rendered, a Triceratops with frill and three-horned skull, two large theropods in dynamic open-jawed poses, a running bipedal theropod in mid-stride, and an upright winged specimen. These are water-slide decals. They are applied to glass that has already been fired and has a smooth surface, not to raw glass or frit. Because the decal bonds to the top of the glass rather than fusing into it as a glass layer, COE compatibility is not a factor. To apply, soak a cut decal in room-temperature water until it slides freely on its backing, position it on clean, dry, pre-fired glass, slide the backing away, and smooth from the center outward to clear trapped water and air. Let the piece dry fully before loading your kiln.

Do these decals work on any glass COE?
Yes. Water-slide glass decals are applied on top of pre-fired glass and fired onto the surface rather than into the glass body. Because they are not a fused glass layer, they do not need to match the COE of your base glass. They work on any pre-fired glass with a smooth, clean surface.

How do I apply these decals?
Cut each decal from the sheet and soak it in room-temperature water for about 20 to 30 seconds until it slides freely on its backing. Position it on clean, pre-fired glass and slide the paper backing out from underneath. Smooth the decal flat with a soft tool or fingertip, working from the center outward to remove air and excess water. Let the piece dry completely before placing it in the kiln.

How many designs come on the sheet?
The sheet contains nine individual dinosaur skeleton designs. You can cut them apart and place each skeleton independently on separate pieces of glass.

Working Notes

Apply these decals only to glass that has been pre-fired and has a smooth surface. Make sure the glass is free of dust, oils, and fingerprints before positioning the decal. The piece must be completely dry before kiln loading. Any remaining moisture can cause the decal to bubble or lift during the firing cycle. These are single-color line-art decals, so keep the firing toward the lower end of the range to hold the fine detail.

Suggested Firing Schedule (a suggested starting point only, not a guarantee of results; every kiln fires differently, so test a small piece first and anneal for the thickness of your glass): Firing range 1240 to 1370 degrees F, kept toward the lower end to keep the color dense. Ventilate the kiln well up to 1000 degrees and fire slowly below 500 degrees. 50 degrees per hour to 185 degrees, hold 20 minutes. 150 degrees per hour to 300 degrees, hold 15 minutes. 250 degrees per hour to 500 degrees, hold 15 minutes. 600 degrees per hour to 1000 degrees, hold 10 minutes. Then to 1240 to 1370 degrees, hold about 10 minutes. Anneal for the thickness of your glass.
