Dragonflies Decal Sheet

This sheet holds fourteen dragonfly illustrations drawn in the style of a vintage natural-history engraving, in fine black line work with careful wing venation, segmented bodies, and leg detail. The dragonflies appear in varied species and orientations, from straight overhead views to slight side angles, with some showing banded or spotted wings and one darker-winged form. A final motif places a dragonfly beside a cluster of marsh grass for a more scenic accent. Printed on clear film, the black line reads over any glass color beneath it.

These water-slide decals fire onto the surface of pre-fired glass, adding illustrated detail without a compatible fusing layer, so they work with any COE glass already in your studio. Soak an individual decal until it releases from the backing, slide it onto clean, dry glass, smooth out trapped water and air, let the piece dry completely, then fire.

What do the designs look like?

What glass can I use?
Any glass that has already been fired and cooled. The decal fires onto the surface rather than fusing as a compatible layer, so COE compatibility is not a factor. The glass must be clean and free of oils before application.

How do I apply a decal?
Cut the motif from the sheet, soak it about 30 seconds until it slides freely, position it on clean pre-fired glass, then push out trapped water and air from the center outward. Let the piece dry fully before firing.

Can I arrange several on one piece?
Yes. Place several motifs on a single piece, leaving a small gap between images. Make sure every decal is fully dry before firing.

Working Notes

Apply decals only to clean, grease-free glass that has already been fired and cooled. Oils or residue beneath the decal can cause lifting or uneven bonding. Allow the applied decal to dry completely before firing. These are single-color decals, so fire toward the lower end of the range. Every kiln fires differently, so test a small piece and anneal for the thickness of your glass.

Suggested Firing Schedule (a starting point only, not a guarantee of results): This is a single-color decal, so fire toward the lower end of its range to keep the image dense. Ventilate the kiln well up to 1000 degrees F and fire slowly below 500 degrees F. Every kiln fires differently, so test a small piece first and anneal for the thickness of your glass.
50 degrees per hour to 185 degrees F, hold 20 min.
150 degrees per hour to 300 degrees F, hold 15 min.
250 degrees per hour to 500 degrees F, hold 15 min.
600 degrees per hour to 1000 degrees F, hold 10 min.
Then to 1240 to 1370 degrees F, hold about 10 min.
Anneal for the thickness of your glass.
