The Dragonfly Casting Mold from Colour de Verre is a reusable ceramic frit-casting mold that produces dragonfly shapes from glass frit loaded directly into the cavities. The design features wings that can be slumped slightly upward after the initial casting firing, giving each finished dragonfly a more lifelike, dimensional appearance. The cast pieces work well as garden stakes, sun catchers, or accents on other fused glass projects.
The mold measures 4 inches by 5.5 inches and takes about 100 grams of glass per fill. Like all ceramic casting molds, it is COE agnostic: the same mold works with COE96, COE90, or other compatible fusible glass, as long as you match the firing schedule to the glass you are using. The mold is reusable across many firings when properly primed and cared for.
What does the Dragonfly Casting Mold make? It casts dragonfly shapes from glass frit loaded into the mold cavities. The wings can be slumped slightly upward in a second firing to add dimension, which makes the finished pieces well suited for garden stakes or sun catchers.
Can I shape the wings after the initial casting? Yes. The mold is designed so the wings can be slumped upward in a subsequent slump firing, giving the finished piece a three-dimensional look suited to mounting on a stake or displaying as a sun catcher.
How much glass do I need? Colour de Verre lists a fill weight of about 100 grams for this mold. Weigh your frit and test a first run when the result matters, since actual fill weight can vary with how the frit is packed.
What COE glass works in this mold? Any COE. Ceramic casting molds are COE agnostic, so this mold works equally with COE96, COE90, or other fusible glass. Use a firing schedule matched to the glass you are firing.

Working Notes
These are guidelines, not guarantees. Every kiln fires a little differently, so test a small run first when the result matters and follow a casting schedule suited to your glass and kiln.
Prime the mold cavities before every use. Colour de Verre recommends ZYP Boron Nitride Mold Primer or Hotline Primo Primer . Let the primer dry completely before adding glass so the cast pieces release cleanly.
Fill the cavities with glass frit to the Colour de Verre suggested weight of about 100 grams. Frit, powder, and small billets all work well.
The mold is COE agnostic. Use a firing schedule matched to the glass you are using.
After the initial casting, the wings can be slumped upward in a second firing to produce a more lifelike, three-dimensional appearance.
Let the kiln cool fully before removing the cast pieces. Re-prime the mold before each subsequent firing.
Suggested Firing Schedule
This is a suggested starting point, not a guarantee. Every kiln fires differently. Follow the Colour de Verre project sheet for this mold and test a small run before committing to a full batch.
Heat no faster than about 350 F (195 C) per hour to avoid thermal shock to the mold and glass.
Fire to a peak of no more than about 1450 F (785 C).
Add a controlled cool and hold at the appropriate anneal soak temperature for your glass.
