Feathers Decal Sheet

This sheet features four feather designs, each rendered as fine cobalt blue line art on a white ground. The four feathers each have a distinct character: the first displays clear horizontal barring with alternating light and dark bands across its width, similar to a hawk or barred owl feather. The second is a full, rounded plume with a solid dark blue tip and many fine barbs radiating from a central quill. The third is the airiest of the group, its soft branching barbs extending outward in a wispy, down-like silhouette. The fourth is narrower and more pointed, with a pattern of white dots on a deep blue field running the length of the vane. All four designs are printed in cobalt blue and white only, with no metallic finish, arranged side by side across the sheet.

These are water-slide decals, applied to pre-fired glass and then fired in place. Because the decal bonds to the glass surface rather than fusing as a glass layer, no COE match is required and the sheet works on any pre-fired fusible glass. To use, trim the design you want from the sheet, soak it in water until the film slides freely from the paper backing, position it on clean glass, smooth out water and air bubbles with a soft tool, allow it to dry fully, and then fire according to the schedule in the Working Notes below.

What are the four feather designs on this sheet?
The set includes a horizontally barred feather, a full rounded plume with a dark blue tip, a wispy soft-barbed feather, and a narrower pointed feather with a white dot pattern. All four are printed in cobalt blue on a white background and each is a visually distinct feather type.

Do I need to match the COE of my glass to use these decals?
No. These water-slide decals fire onto the surface of glass rather than fusing into it as a compatible glass layer, so they work with any COE. Apply them to clean, pre-fired glass of any type.

Can I apply the four designs to separate pieces?
Yes. Trim the individual feathers apart with scissors before soaking, so you can apply one at a time or arrange several together on one piece.

Do the decals need a protective layer after firing?
These decals are designed to be fired directly onto pre-fired glass and do not require a cover layer. The fired decal bonds to the glass surface. If you plan to fire additional passes or add an overglaze, test a sample piece first.

Working Notes

Apply decals only to clean, pre-fired glass. Remove oils, residue, and fingerprints from the glass surface before starting. Soak the trimmed decal in water until the film releases freely from the paper backing, slide it into position, and use a soft squeegee or fingertip to press out water and air bubbles from the center outward. Allow the piece to dry completely, at minimum several hours, before loading the kiln. Do not rush the drying step.

Suggested Firing Schedule (a starting point only, not a guarantee of results): Fire to roughly 1240 to 1370 degrees F, held about 10 minutes, keeping toward the lower end to preserve the density of the print. Every kiln fires differently, so test a small piece first and anneal for the thickness of your glass. Ventilate the kiln well up to 1000 degrees and fire slowly below 500 degrees.
50 degrees per hour to 185 degrees, hold 20 min.
150 degrees per hour to 300 degrees, hold 15 min.
250 degrees per hour to 500 degrees, hold 15 min.
600 degrees per hour to 1000 degrees, hold 10 min.
Then to 1240 to 1370 degrees, hold about 10 min.
Anneal for the thickness of your glass.
