Friezes Decal Sheet

The Friezes Decal Sheet presents five decorative border bands printed in black and white line work, ready to run along the edge of a glass piece. Three of the strips are peacock-feather borders: dense rows of curving plumes, each tipped with the eye-shaped marking of a peacock feather, drawn in fine detail. The other two strips are floral borders showing flowering plants rising from tufts of grass, repeated across the length of the band. Each strip spans the width of the sheet, so you can cut a full-length border or trim shorter sections to frame a tile, plate, or panel.

These are water-slide transfer decals designed to fire on top of pre-fired glass, adding graphic line detail to finished fused or slumped pieces. Because the decal fires onto the glass surface rather than into a compatible fused glass stack, there is no COE restriction on the base glass. Soak the decal in clean water until the image releases from its paper backing, slide it into position on clean pre-fired glass, smooth out water and air bubbles from the center outward with a soft squeegee or card edge, allow the piece to dry fully, and fire.

What designs are on this sheet?
The sheet holds five border strips: three peacock-feather bands and two floral bands of flowering plants in grass. Each is a long horizontal border meant to edge or frame a glass piece, and each spans the width of the sheet so it can be cut to length.

Do I need to match COE when using these decals?
No. These water-slide decals fire onto the surface of pre-fired glass, not into a compatible fused glass stack. COE matching is not required, and they work on pre-fired glass of any COE.

What glass preparation is needed before applying a decal?
The glass must be fully fired and completely clean before decal application. Remove all fingerprints, oils, and kiln wash residue from the surface. Contamination beneath the decal can cause adhesion problems or uneven results after firing.

Can I apply these decals to slumped or curved glass?
Yes, provided all shaping of the glass is already complete and the piece is clean and pre-fired. Smooth the border carefully over curved surfaces to eliminate air pockets, then fire per the schedule below. Decal firing is always a separate step carried out after all forming is done.

Working Notes

Apply decals to pre-fired glass that is free of fingerprints, oils, and kiln residue. Soak the decal in room-temperature water for 30 to 60 seconds, or until the image slides freely from its paper backing. Position the border on the glass, then use a soft squeegee or card edge to push water and air out from beneath the decal, working from the center toward the edges. Let the piece dry fully and uncovered before loading it into the kiln.

Suggested Firing Schedule: On fused glass this single-color print fires to a final range of 1240 to 1370 degrees F, held about 10 minutes and kept toward the lower end to preserve density. Ventilate the kiln well up to 1000 degrees and fire slowly below 500 degrees.
50 degrees per hour to 185 degrees, hold 20 min.
150 degrees per hour to 300 degrees, hold 15 min.
250 degrees per hour to 500 degrees, hold 15 min.
600 degrees per hour to 1000 degrees, hold 10 min.
Then to 1240 to 1370 degrees, hold about 10 min.
This is a recommended starting range, not a firing guarantee. Every kiln fires differently. Anneal to the appropriate temperature for the thickness of your glass. Test a small piece before committing to a full project.
