Large Butterflies Decal Sheet

This decal sheet features four large butterfly and moth designs rendered in detailed black-and-white illustration. Each of the four depicts a different species, with distinct wing shapes, venation, and markings: a broad-winged specimen with bold spot and stripe patterning, a slender elongated form with fine line work, an intricately spotted moth with a full body, and a swallowtail with tailed hindwings. The four designs are arranged in a two-by-two layout on a single 5.25 x 4 inch sheet.

These are water-slide decals applied to pre-fired glass. Trim the design you want from the sheet, soak it in room-temperature water for 30 to 60 seconds until the film releases from its paper backing, then slide it onto a clean, already-fired glass piece. Smooth out water and air bubbles from the center outward, allow the piece to dry completely, then fire. Because the decal sits on top of a fired surface rather than between layers, no COE matching is required and it works on any pre-fired glass. The crisp monochrome imagery suits tiles, platters, pendants, and decorative panels.

Can I use these decals on any glass?
Yes. The decal fires onto the surface of a pre-fired piece rather than fusing as a structural glass layer, so COE compatibility is not a factor. Use them on any kiln-fired glass as long as the base piece is already fired and clean before you begin.

How do I apply the decal without trapping bubbles?
After soaking and sliding the decal into position, use a soft rubber squeegee or a damp fingertip to work gently from the center of the design toward the edges, coaxing out water and air. Allow the piece to dry fully at room temperature before loading the kiln.

Should decals be the last step in my project?
Yes. Complete all fusing and slumping first so the base glass is in its final shape and surface. Decal firing peaks at a lower temperature than a full fuse, so applying a decal at the end does not disturb prior work.

Are all four designs different?
Yes. The sheet gives you four different species, each with its own wing shape and markings, rather than four copies of one image.

Working Notes

Apply to a pre-fired glass surface that is clean, dry, and free of dust, oils, and residue from previous firings. After positioning the decal, allow it to dry completely before firing; any moisture under the film can cause lifting or bubbling during the kiln run. Anneal for the thickness of your glass. Treat the schedule below as the manufacturer's suggested starting point, test a small piece before committing finished work, and adjust based on your kiln.

Suggested Firing Schedule (a suggested starting point only, not a guarantee of results; every kiln fires differently, so test a small piece first and anneal for the thickness of your glass): Firing range 1240 to 1370 degrees F, kept toward the lower end to keep the color dense. Ventilate the kiln well up to 1000 degrees and fire slowly below 500 degrees. 50 degrees per hour to 185 degrees, hold 20 minutes. 150 degrees per hour to 300 degrees, hold 15 minutes. 250 degrees per hour to 500 degrees, hold 15 minutes. 600 degrees per hour to 1000 degrees, hold 10 minutes. Then to 1240 to 1370 degrees, hold about 10 minutes. Anneal for the thickness of your glass.
