Lily Pad and Frog Mold

The Lily Pad and Frog mold from Colour de Verre is a dual-purpose ceramic casting mold that casts a 5-inch lily pad and three 1.5-inch frog accents in a single firing. Once the pieces come out of the kiln, flip the mold over and use the reverse side as a built-in slumper to shape the lily pad into a small decorative bowl. Attach the frogs underneath as feet for a finished, nature-inspired piece.

The cast lily pad and frogs are also well suited for adding detail to glass plates, bowls, and platters. Colour de Verre lists a fill weight of about 124 grams of frit for the lily pad cavity and about 23 grams for the frog cavities. Like all ceramic casting molds, this one is COE agnostic, so it works with COE96, COE90, or other compatible fusible glass when you match your firing schedule to the glass.

What does the Lily Pad and Frog mold make?

How does the built-in slumper work?
After the cast lily pad cools and comes out of the kiln, flip the mold upside down. The reverse side acts as a slumper. Place the cast lily pad on top and fire at a slumping temperature suited to your glass so it takes on a curved bowl shape.

How much glass do I need?
Colour de Verre lists about 124 grams for the lily pad cavity and about 23 grams for the frog cavities. Fill weight varies with frit size and packing, so weigh your glass and test a first run when the result matters.

What COE glass can I use?
Any COE. Ceramic casting molds are COE agnostic, so this mold works with COE96, COE90, or other compatible fusible glass. Match your firing schedule to the specific glass you are using.

How do I prep the mold before each use?
Prime all cavities with a mold primer before every firing and let the coating dry completely before adding glass. Colour de Verre specifically recommends ZYP BN Lubricoat or Hotline Primo Primer for their ceramic molds.

Working Notes

These are guidelines, not guarantees. Every kiln fires a little differently, so test a small run first when the result matters and follow a casting schedule suited to your glass and kiln.

• Prime all mold cavities with a mold primer before every use and let it dry completely before adding glass. Colour de Verre recommends ZYP Boron Nitride Mold Primer or Hotline Primo Primer for their ceramic molds. Re-prime between firings as needed.
• Fill the lily pad cavity with about 124 grams of frit and the frog cavities with about 23 grams for the frogs. Fine or medium frit tends to pick up mold detail well.
• The mold is COE agnostic. Use a casting schedule matched to the specific glass you are using.
• To use the built-in slumper after casting, re-prime the reverse side of the mold, place the fused lily pad on it, and fire at a slumping temperature appropriate for your glass.
• Let the kiln cool fully before removing cast or slumped pieces.

Colour de Verre Suggested Firing Schedule

This is a suggested starting schedule based on Colour de Verre general guidance, not a guarantee. Every kiln fires differently. Follow the Colour de Verre project sheet for this mold and test a small run first.

• Prime the mold before every use and let the primer dry completely.
• Heat no faster than about 350 F (195 C) per hour.
• Fire to no more than about 1450 F (785 C).
• Follow with a controlled cool and an anneal soak appropriate to your glass type and COE.
