Maps Decal Sheet

This sheet carries fifteen circular decals portraying antique-style cartographic imagery drawn from the age of exploration. The designs include detailed old-world maps, ornate compass roses, and maritime charts, all rendered in warm, aged tones of ochre, terracotta, teal, green, and parchment gold. Each circular medallion carries the look of 16th and 17th century European cartography, giving the finished piece the feel of a hand-illuminated atlas. Across the fifteen decals, designs range from multi-point compass stars and richly patterned navigational roses to landmass charts and coastline illustrations, so no two circles are identical.

These are water-slide fusible glass decals applied to the surface of pre-fired glass. Because they fire onto the surface rather than fusing as a compatible glass layer, they work with kiln glass of any COE. Soak each decal briefly in water until it releases from its backing paper, slide it onto clean dry pre-fired glass, smooth out bubbles with a soft squeegee, allow the piece to dry completely, then fire according to your kiln and the schedule below.

What glass can I use these decals on?
Any COE glass. These decals are fired on top of an already-fused, fully annealed piece rather than sandwiched between layers, so glass compatibility between the decal and your base glass is not a concern the way it would be for a fused glass layer.

How do I apply a water-slide decal?
Soak the individual decal in clean, room-temperature water for 30 to 60 seconds until it releases from its backing paper. Slide it carefully onto a clean, grease-free, pre-fired glass surface. Use a soft squeegee or damp finger to smooth out air bubbles and excess water from the center outward. Allow the piece to dry fully before loading the kiln.

How many decals are on this sheet?
The sheet carries fifteen individual map decals, each a circular design with a distinct cartographic motif, roughly half old maps and half compass roses.

Can I use the decals on separate pieces of glass?
Yes. Each decal is a separate printed unit on the sheet. Cut around individual designs with scissors and apply each to a different piece of glass, making this sheet well suited for a coordinated series of projects.

Working Notes

Apply decals only to clean, grease-free glass. Oils or residue on the surface can cause the decal to lift or blister during firing. Let the piece dry thoroughly after application before placing it in the kiln, and ramp slowly through the early stages to allow any remaining moisture to escape without creating steam beneath the decal.

Suggested Firing Schedule (the manufacturer's recommendation, a starting point only): Firing range is roughly 1275 to 1380 degrees F. These full-color prints are semi-translucent and read best on white or light glass. This is a suggested starting point, not a guarantee of results. Every kiln fires differently, so test a small piece first and anneal for the thickness of your glass. Ventilate the kiln well up to 1000 degrees and fire slowly below 500 degrees.
50 DPH to 185 degrees F, HOLD/SOAK 20 min.
150 DPH to 300 degrees F, HOLD/SOAK 15 min.
250 DPH to 500 degrees F, HOLD/SOAK 15 min.
600 DPH to 1000 degrees F, HOLD/SOAK 10 min.
Then to 1275 to 1380 degrees F, HOLD/SOAK 10 min.
Anneal for the thickness of the glass.
