Oak Leaves and Acorns

The Oak Leaves and Acorns mold from Colour de Verre is a reusable ceramic frit-casting mold that forms two oak leaves in different sizes and a pair of detailed acorns in one firing. The smaller leaf measures 2.5 inches and calls for about 15 grams of glass; the larger leaf measures 3 inches and calls for about 27 grams. Each of the two acorns measures 1 inch and uses about 7 grams. All four cavities can be filled and fired together in a single session.

The reverse side of the mold features an undulating slumping surface. Once you have cast a leaf, you can refire it over this surface at a lower temperature to add a gentle, organic curve for a more natural, dimensional result. Like all ceramic casting molds, it is COE agnostic and reusable across many firings when prepped correctly between uses.

What does the Oak Leaves and Acorns mold make?
Each firing produces two oak leaves, one at 2.5 inches and one at 3 inches, plus two acorns each measuring 1 inch. All four pieces can be cast in a single firing.

What is the slumping surface on the reverse?
The back of the mold has an undulating surface that lets you add a gentle curve to a finished leaf casting. Refire the cast leaf over that side at a lower temperature to create a more dimensional, natural look.

How much glass do I need per cavity?
Colour de Verre lists about 15 grams for the 2.5 inch leaf, 27 grams for the 3 inch leaf, and 7 grams per acorn. Weigh your glass and test a first run when the result matters.

What COE glass can I use?
Any COE. Ceramic casting molds are COE agnostic, so this mold works with COE96, COE90, or other compatible fusible glass. Match your firing schedule to the glass you are using.

How do I prep this mold before each use?
Colour de Verre calls for priming the cavities before every firing with ZYP BN Lubricoat or Hotline Primo Primer. Let the primer dry completely before adding glass.

Working Notes

These are guidelines, not guarantees. Every kiln fires a little differently, so test a small run first when the result matters and follow a casting schedule suited to your glass and kiln.

• Prime all cavities before every firing with ZYP Boron Nitride Mold Primer or Hotline Primo Primer. Let the primer dry fully before adding glass. Colour de Verre recommends repriming before every firing, not just the first.
• Fill the cavities with frit, powder, or small billets: about 15 grams for the 2.5 inch leaf, 27 grams for the 3 inch leaf, and 7 grams per acorn.
• To add a natural curve to a finished leaf, refire it over the undulating slumping surface on the reverse side of the mold at a lower temperature.
• The mold is COE agnostic. Use a fusing schedule matched to your glass and adjust the anneal soak temperature for your COE.
• Let the kiln cool fully before removing cast pieces. Reprime the mold before the next firing.

Suggested Firing Schedule

This is a suggested starting point, not a guarantee. Every kiln fires differently. Follow the Colour de Verre project sheet for this mold and test a small run before committing to a full batch.

• Heat no faster than about 350 F (195 C) per hour through the casting phase.
• Fire to no more than about 1450 F (785 C).
• Follow with a controlled cool and an anneal soak suited to your glass: about 950 F for COE96, or about 900 F for COE90.
• Let the kiln reach room temperature before removing the cast pieces.
