Round Box and Lid

The Round Box and Lid mold from Colour de Verre is a two-part ceramic frit-casting mold set that produces a matching glass base and lid in a single firing. The base mold measures approximately 5.5 inches by 5.5 inches by 2.25 inches and holds up to 295 grams of glass. The lid mold is the smaller piece in the set and holds up to 115 grams. Together they yield a functional lidded glass box sized for jewelry, trinkets, or small keepsakes.

Fill each cavity with glass frit of any mesh size, billets, casting rocks and nuggets, glass pebbles, sheet glass cut or broken to fit, or nipped rods. You can use a single material or combine several in one pour. Like all ceramic casting molds, this set is COE agnostic and reusable across many firings when primed and cared for properly. In a second firing, you can tack fuse additional Colour de Verre castings onto the base or lid to add decorative surface detail.

How much glass do I need?
Colour de Verre lists up to 295 grams of frit for the base mold and up to 115 grams for the lid mold. Weigh your glass and run a test firing when the result matters, as fill weight can vary by material type and desired piece fullness.

What fill materials can I use?
Glass frit of any mesh size, billets, casting rocks and nuggets, glass pebbles, sheet glass cut or broken to fit, and nipped rods all work. You can also combine any of these materials in a single pour.

What COE glass works with this mold?
Any COE. Ceramic casting molds are COE agnostic, so the same set works with COE96, COE90, or other fusible glass. Match your firing schedule to the glass you are using.

Can I decorate the finished box?
Yes. In a second firing, you can tack fuse additional Colour de Verre castings onto the base or lid for surface detail. Suitable decorative additions include blossoms, leaves, dragonflies, butterflies, pine cones, and scarabs.

Working Notes

These are guidelines, not guarantees. Every kiln fires a little differently, so test a small run first when the result matters and follow the Colour de Verre project sheet for this mold.

• Prime both mold cavities before every use with ZYP Boron Nitride Mold Primer or Hotline Primo Primer, and let the primer dry completely before adding glass. Colour de Verre recommends priming before every use.
• Fill the cavities with frit of any mesh, billets, casting rocks, nuggets, glass pebbles, sheet glass, or nipped rods. Target up to 295 grams for the base and up to 115 grams for the lid, adjusting to how full you want each piece.
• The mold set is COE agnostic. Use a casting schedule suited to the glass you are using and adjust for your kiln.
• To add surface decoration in a second firing, tack fuse additional Colour de Verre castings such as blossoms, leaves, or dragonflies onto the outside of the finished base or lid.
• Let the kiln cool fully before removing the cast pieces. Re-coat the mold cavities with primer before each subsequent firing.

Suggested Firing Schedule

This is a suggested starting point, not a guarantee. Every kiln fires differently. Follow the Colour de Verre project sheet for this mold and test a small run first.

• Heat no faster than approximately 350 F (195 C) per hour to avoid thermal shock to the mold and glass.
• Fire to a peak of no more than approximately 1450 F (785 C).
• Hold at an anneal soak temperature suited to your glass type and piece thickness, then control the cool through the strain point.
