Salamander Mold

The Salamander mold from Colour de Verre casts a single figurine inspired by the salamanders of the Pacific Northwest rainforests. Like all ceramic casting molds, this one is COE agnostic. Load the cavity with frit or small glass pieces, prime the mold before every use, and fire to a full fuse. Working Notes

These are guidelines, not guarantees. Every kiln fires a little differently, so test a small run first when the result matters and follow the Colour de Verre project sheet for this mold.

• Prime the cavity before every use with ZYP Boron Nitride Mold Primer or Hotline Primo Primer and let it dry completely before adding glass. Colour de Verre specifies these primers for their molds.
• Fill the cavity with about 65 grams of frit. Fine or medium frit packs well and flows into the detail areas of the mold.
• The mold is COE agnostic. Use a full fuse schedule matched to your glass and adjust the anneal soak temperature for your COE.
• Let the kiln cool fully before removing the cast piece. Re-prime the mold as needed between firings.

Suggested Firing Schedule

This is a suggested starting schedule, not a guarantee. Every kiln fires differently. Follow the Colour de Verre project sheet for this mold and test a small run first.

• Heat no faster than about 350 F (195 C) per hour.
• Fire to no more than about 1450 F (785 C).
• Add a controlled cool with an anneal soak for your glass: about 950 F for COE96, or about 900 F for COE90.
• Hold at the anneal soak temperature, then cool slowly to room temperature.
