Sea Shells Decal Sheet

This sheet carries fifteen sea shell motifs printed in black on a clear decal film in a detailed, vintage natural-history engraving style. The designs depict a varied collection of shell forms: a tapered conch or whelk, fan-shaped ribbed scallops, round nautilus-like spirals, tall pointed cone shells, rounded bivalves and cockles, and small spiral forms. These are water-slide transfers that bond to the surface of pre-fired glass during a kiln firing. Soak a trimmed decal in clean water until it releases from its paper backing, slide it into position on clean pre-fired glass, and smooth it flat with a soft squeegee or fingertip, working out all water and air from the center outward. Let the piece dry fully before loading the kiln. Because the decal sits on the glass surface rather than fusing as a glass layer, it works with pre-fired glass of any COE.

What shell forms are on this sheet?
The sheet shows fifteen distinct shell motifs drawn in a precise engraving style: a tapered conch, fan-shaped scallops, round nautilus-like spirals, pointed cone shells, rounded clam and cockle forms, and small spiral shells. Each is a separate element you can cut individually and position anywhere on your glass.

Can I use these decals on any COE glass?
Yes. Because decals are applied to the surface of already-fired glass rather than fused as a glass layer, they do not need to match your base glass COE. Your base glass simply needs to be clean and fully pre-fired before you slide a decal into place.

How do I apply a water-slide decal?
Trim closely around the decal, then soak it in clean room-temperature water for about 30 seconds until it slides freely on its backing. Position it on your clean pre-fired glass and slide the paper backing away. Smooth the decal flat from the center outward to remove all trapped water and air. Let the piece dry completely before placing it in the kiln.

Do these decals need a special kiln shelf setup?
No. Prepare your kiln shelf the same way you would for any fired glass piece. Standard kiln wash or fiber paper under your base glass is appropriate. The decal does not change how you load or support the glass in the kiln.

Working Notes

Apply decals only to pre-fired glass with a clean, oil-free surface. Dust, fingerprints, or residue can cause lifting or bubbling during firing. Wiping the glass with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth immediately before application is a reliable preparation step. Allow the decal to dry fully before kiln loading, and always test one decal on a spare piece of glass before committing to a finished project.

Suggested Firing Schedule (a starting point only, not a guarantee of results): Fire to roughly 1240 to 1370 degrees F, held about 10 minutes, keeping toward the lower end to preserve the density of the print. Every kiln fires differently, so test a small piece first and anneal for the thickness of your glass. Ventilate the kiln well up to 1000 degrees and fire slowly below 500 degrees.
50 degrees per hour to 185 degrees, hold 20 min.
150 degrees per hour to 300 degrees, hold 15 min.
250 degrees per hour to 500 degrees, hold 15 min.
600 degrees per hour to 1000 degrees, hold 10 min.
Then to 1240 to 1370 degrees, hold about 10 min.
Anneal for the thickness of your glass.
