Sea Turtles Decal Sheet

This sheet features nine sea turtle illustrations arranged in three rows of three. Each decal depicts a sea turtle in a detailed black-and-white engraving style, most from an overhead perspective. Fine linework traces each carapace, flipper, and head, and the variation in shell shape and body proportion across the nine images gives the sheet a naturalistic, field-guide quality rather than a single repeated motif.

These are water-slide fusible glass decals. You soak a decal in water until it releases from its paper backing, slide it into position on the surface of clean pre-fired glass, smooth out any water and air bubbles, let it dry completely, then fire it in your kiln. Because the decal bonds to the surface of the glass rather than fusing as a compatible glass layer, it works with any COE. The fired result adds graphic, illustrated detail to pendants, tiles, panels, and other flat glass pieces.

How many decals come on this sheet?
The sheet holds nine individual sea turtle decals in a three-by-three layout, each a distinct illustration.

Will these decals work with my glass regardless of COE?
Yes. Because decals fire onto the surface of pre-fired glass rather than fusing into it as a glass layer, they are not tied to a specific COE. Your base glass must be already fired and have a smooth, clean surface before you apply a decal.

How do I apply a water-slide decal?
Trim the decal if needed, then soak it in water until it slides freely from the backing. Position it on clean pre-fired glass, smooth out any trapped water or bubbles with a soft squeegee or fingertip, and allow it to dry fully before loading the kiln. Any residual moisture can cause lifting or blistering during firing.

Can I use only some of the decals and save the rest?
Yes. Cut individual turtles apart with scissors before soaking so you can use one at a time. Store unused decal paper flat, away from humidity and direct sunlight, to keep the remaining decals in good condition.

Working Notes

Apply decals only to a clean, smooth, pre-fired surface. Oils, dust, or fingerprints can prevent even adhesion, so handle your base glass by the edges and clean it thoroughly before starting. Allow each decal to dry completely before placing the piece in the kiln. Firing a damp decal can cause it to lift, bubble, or shift out of position.

Suggested Firing Schedule (a starting point only, not a guarantee of results): Fire to roughly 1240 to 1370 degrees F, held about 10 minutes, keeping toward the lower end to preserve the density of the print. Every kiln fires differently, so test a small piece first and anneal for the thickness of your glass. Ventilate the kiln well up to 1000 degrees and fire slowly below 500 degrees.
50 degrees per hour to 185 degrees, hold 20 min.
150 degrees per hour to 300 degrees, hold 15 min.
250 degrees per hour to 500 degrees, hold 15 min.
600 degrees per hour to 1000 degrees, hold 10 min.
Then to 1240 to 1370 degrees, hold about 10 min.
Anneal for the thickness of your glass.
