Solid Color Glass Decals Luster Finishes

These solid color luster decal sheets are offered in four metallic finishes: Gold, a warm classic metallic; Imitation Gold, a brighter, more saturated golden tone; Copper, a deep earthy hue with reddish warmth; and Platinum, a soft cool silver-gray. Every finish carries the hallmark of a luster decal, a semi-reflective, subtly metallic surface tone that reads with more depth and dimension than a standard flat opaque color field.

Each sheet is a single continuous field of solid color with no pre-printed motif. You cut the sheet to any shape you need, then apply it as a water-slide transfer onto clean, pre-fired glass. Soak the cut piece in room-temperature water for about 20 to 30 seconds until the backing releases, slide it into position on the glass surface, smooth firmly from the center outward to remove trapped air and water, then allow the piece to dry completely before firing. The luster chemistry bonds to the glass during the firing cycle, producing a consistent, richly toned layer wherever it is placed.

Which luster finishes are available?

Can I cut these sheets into custom shapes?
Yes. Because the entire sheet is one solid color field, you can cut it with scissors or a craft knife into any shape: geometric tiles, borders, free-form organic fills, letter templates, or precisely sized inlays. This flexibility makes it straightforward to create layered compositions or crisp, cleanly edged color fills without being limited to a pre-printed layout.

Do I need to match COE for these decals?
No. These solid color luster decals are applied to clean, pre-fired glass and fired on the surface, so they work with any COE glass. Fire following the schedule in the Working Notes below, and test a small piece first when working a new combination.

What distinguishes a luster finish from a standard color decal?
Luster decals contain metallic compounds that form a thin, semi-reflective film on the glass surface when fired. The result sits between a fully matte opaque and a mirror-bright metallic: colors appear warm and dimensional, with a soft sheen that shifts slightly with the viewing angle. The gold and copper tones in particular read as layered and rich rather than flat.

Working Notes

Apply luster decals only to clean, pre-fired glass that is free of oils, dust, fingerprints, and kiln wash residue. Handle the unfired decal surface with care to avoid smudging the luster chemistry before it bonds in the kiln. After sliding the decal into position, smooth firmly from the center outward, then allow the piece to dry completely before loading. Because luster finishes contain metallic compounds, firing temperature matters: too low and the decal will not fully bond to the glass; too high and the luster sheen can flatten or discolor.

Suggested Firing Schedule (a suggested starting point, not a guarantee of results): On fused glass this single-color luster fires to a final range of 1240 to 1370 degrees F, held about 10 minutes and kept toward the lower end to preserve the density of the finish. Ventilate the kiln well up to 1000 degrees and fire slowly below 500 degrees.
50 degrees per hour to 185 degrees, hold 20 min.
150 degrees per hour to 300 degrees, hold 15 min.
250 degrees per hour to 500 degrees, hold 15 min.
600 degrees per hour to 1000 degrees, hold 10 min.
Then to 1240 to 1370 degrees, hold about 10 min.
As a general principle, fire at the lowest temperature in that range that fully bonds the luster to the glass. Test a small sample piece in your own kiln first, because every kiln fires differently, and anneal according to the thickness of your base glass rather than the decal thickness alone.
