Wissmach Dark Red (color code 96-41) is COE 96 kiln glass, a bold saturated red opalescent in a 3mm sheet, tested for fusing compatibility.
Appearance The unfired sheet is a bright, even scarlet, more fire engine than wine, dense and consistent from edge to edge with only a few tiny specks. It blocks light like an opaque, holding the same strong red on a lightbox or a tabletop. The Dark Red name points at where the color goes in the kiln rather than the raw sheet in your hand.
Striking Expect the fired color to run noticeably deeper than the unfired glass. Wissmach notes that its Opaque and Prisma colors may strike toward a denser shade in the kiln, and this red is a clear example, settling toward its true dark red with firing. Fire a sample chip first if an exact match matters.
Working notes Wissmach’s recommended full fuse schedule for a 6mm project made from two 3mm layers: heat at 300 degrees F per hour to 1225 F and hold 30 minutes, then 600 per hour to 1460 F with a 10 minute hold, cool as fast as the kiln allows to 960 F and hold 1 hour, then 100 per hour down to 700 F. These numbers come from Wissmach’s current published firing guidance. They are guidelines, not guarantees. Kilns differ, so fire a small test piece first.
Reactions Dark Red is a sulfur bearing color on Wissmach's COE 96 chart. In direct contact with a copper bearing color such as Reactive Blue, Deep Sky Blue, Turquoise Green or Sea Blue, it can form a darker copper sulfide line where the glasses touch. Results vary by batch and firing schedule, so test fire the pairing before committing a project.
