Firing Instructions & Helpful Tips: Luminescent Etched Glass
These are guidelines, not guarantees. Each kiln and each handmade sheet behaves a little differently, so test a small piece first when the result matters.
- Cut on the non-etched (back) side. To cut on the etched (front) side instead, pre-fire etched-side-down to about 1350°F first.
- Do not cap with clear.
- For the first fuse, fire etched-side-down on fiber paper. Fired face-up the luminescent coating can burn off.
- It can be re-fired etched-side-up at a lower temperature (under 1400°F; we don't exceed 1250°F).

Q: What is etched luminescent glass?
A: A luminescent coating on the glass surface that gives a luminous, pearlescent rainbow shimmer in ordinary light. It is not glow in the dark. Selected areas have been etched away to leave the pattern: the remaining coating carries the rainbow shimmer, and the etched-through areas reveal the base glass beneath. The coating is on one side.
Q: What base options are available for Etched Luminescent Bats?
A: Black Luminescent and Clear Luminescent, with a 2mm Black Luminescent option as well. Standard thickness 3mm. Selected at order time.
Q: How does the rainbow shimmer look on different bases?
A: On a Black base the rainbow shimmer reads bold and high-contrast against the dark ground. On a Clear base it is more translucent and passes light, suited to suncatchers and windows. The shimmer shifts with the light and varies sheet to sheet, and it is seen in normal light, not in the dark.
