Oceanside Black Opalescent (style 56-96) is System 96 tested-compatible 96 COE fusible frit, a solid opaque black supplied as crushed glass for shading, accents and casting.
Appearance
The photo shows crushed black glass broken into angular shards with bright surface highlights where they catch the light. The color is a dense, even black that reads fully opaque, letting no light through. As an opalescent color it stays a true solid black rather than glowing on a lightbox.
Working notes
Frit behaves as small pieces of the same glass, so Black holds its dark color as a solid rather than a transparent wash. A thin scatter reads as speckle while a heavier layer packs into an even dark field. A full fuse melts the grains smooth into the surface, and a tack fuse leaves the granular texture standing proud.
Reactions
This color is not on the System 96 reactive list, so it sits next to other colors without forming a reaction line. See the System 96 Reactive Color Chart for the colors that do react.
Using the frit
Frit is crushed glass sold in grades from fine powder to coarse chunks. Use finer grades for smooth shading and blending color across a piece, and coarser grades for texture, detail or filling molds in casting. Sift it over a base layer, pack it into open areas, or mix grades for depth. This is System 96 96 COE glass and melts on the same schedule as the rest of the System 96 family.
Fusing and compatibility
Tested compatible with other System 96 glass, so it fuses cleanly with any 96 COE product in the System 96 family. When you combine it with glass from other makers, matching COE alone does not guarantee compatibility, so fire a small test tile first.
