Northwoods Maple Mold

The Northwoods Maple mold from Colour de Verre casts one large maple leaf per firing. Each finished leaf measures 9.5 inches (24 cm) wide and 7.5 inches (19 cm) tall, a substantial size suited to wall display, serving pieces, or multi-leaf arrangements. The mold itself is approximately 11 inches by 9 inches (28 x 23 cm) and calls for 300 to 320 grams of frit per firing.

The mold has a dual-purpose design. The reverse side is a custom slumping surface, so once your leaf is cast and annealed you can use the same mold to slump it into a curved plate shape. Tack fusing three or more finished leaves together also yields platters or wall pieces. • Colour de Verre requires priming before every use. Apply ZYP Boron Nitride Mold Primer or Hotline Primo Primer to the cavity and let it dry completely before adding frit. Re-prime before each firing.
• Fill the cavity with 300 to 320 grams of frit. Autumn palettes in oranges, reds, tangerines, and yellows contrast well with the leaf shape; greens work for a spring version.
• The mold is COE agnostic. Use a casting schedule matched to your glass.
• Once the piece has cooled fully, the finished leaf can be slumped on the mold's reverse side to form a curved plate, or tack fused with two or more other leaves to build a platter or wall arrangement.

Colour de Verre Suggested Firing Guidelines

This is a suggested starting point based on Colour de Verre's general guidance, not a guarantee. Every kiln fires differently. Follow the Colour de Verre project sheet for this mold and test a small run first.

• Heat the kiln no faster than about 350 F (195 C) per hour.
• Fire to no more than about 1450 F (785 C).
• Follow a controlled cool with an anneal soak appropriate for the glass you are using, per your glass manufacturer's recommendations.
