The Seahorse and Starfish Mold from Colour de Verre casts three ocean-themed pieces in a single firing: one starfish and two seahorses, with the seahorses cast as a mirrored pair, one facing left and one facing right. The mold footprint measures 7 inches by 4 inches by 1 inch deep, and the finished pieces suit jewelry, sun catchers, and decorative accents.
Like all ceramic casting molds, this one is COE agnostic. Fill the cavities with frit and fire so the glass takes the shape of each cavity. Colour de Verre lists fill weights of 12 to 18 grams for the starfish cavity and 7 to 9 grams for each seahorse cavity. As a reusable ceramic mold it can be used across many firings when primed and cared for properly. Colour de Verre recommends a cooler firing temperature of 1290 to 1310 F (700 to 710 C) for COE96 glass.
What does the Seahorse and Starfish Mold make? One firing yields three pieces: one starfish and two seahorses. The seahorses are a mirrored pair, facing left and right respectively. The pieces work well as jewelry blanks, sun catchers, or small decorative accents.
What COE glass can I use in this mold? Any COE. Ceramic casting molds are COE agnostic, so the same mold works with COE96, COE90, or other fusible glass. Match your firing schedule to the glass you are using.
How much glass do I need per cavity? Colour de Verre lists 12 to 18 grams for the starfish cavity and 7 to 9 grams for each seahorse cavity. Weigh your frit and test a first run when the result matters.
How do I prep this mold before each firing? Prime all cavities before every firing with a boron nitride mold primer. Let the primer dry completely before adding glass. Colour de Verre calls for ZYP BN Lubricoat or Hotline Primo Primer specifically.

Working Notes
These are guidelines, not guarantees. Every kiln fires a little differently, so test a small run first when the result matters and follow the Colour de Verre project sheet for this mold.
Prime all cavities before every firing with ZYP Boron Nitride Mold Primer or Hotline Primo Primer . Colour de Verre specifies these primers for their molds. Let the primer dry completely before adding glass.
Fill the starfish cavity with 12 to 18 grams of frit and each seahorse cavity with 7 to 9 grams of frit. Frit size and blend affect texture and flow, so test and adjust as needed.
Heat no faster than about 350 F (195 C) per hour on the way up to avoid thermal shock to the mold.
Colour de Verre recommends a cooler target temperature of 1290 to 1310 F (700 to 710 C) for COE96. For COE90, fire about 25 F (15 C) hotter. Do not fire hotter than about 1450 F (785 C) as a general maximum for casting molds.
Add a controlled cool and an anneal soak matched to your glass: about 950 F for COE96, or about 900 F for COE90.
Let the kiln cool fully before removing the cast pieces. Re-prime the mold before the next firing.
Colour de Verre Suggested Firing Schedule
This is a suggested starting point, not a guarantee. Every kiln fires differently. Follow the Colour de Verre project sheet for this mold and test a small run before committing to a full batch.
Ramp rate: no faster than about 350 F (195 C) per hour
Target top temperature: 1290 to 1310 F (700 to 710 C) for COE96, or about 25 F (15 C) hotter for COE90
General maximum: do not exceed about 1450 F (785 C)
Anneal soak: about 950 F for COE96, or about 900 F for COE90
