Red Sea Creature Decal Sheet

This 4 by 5.25 inch sheet carries eleven sea creature decals rendered in a detailed, scientific-illustration style. These are water-slide fusible glass decals. After a brief soak in water, each decal slides off its backing paper and onto the surface of clean, pre-fired glass. Smooth out any trapped water and air bubbles with a soft squeegee or your fingertip, allow the piece to dry completely, and then fire it in your kiln. Because the decals are applied to the surface of already-fused glass rather than fused as a compatible glass layer, they work with any COE glass system.

What glass colors work best with these decals?
These decals fire somewhat transparent, so they read most clearly on white or very light-colored glass. On medium to darker glass bases, the colors lose definition and saturation, so plan your base color choice before you begin your piece.

How do I apply a water-slide decal?
Soak the individual decal in room-temperature water for about 30 seconds until it loosens from its backing paper. Slide it into position on clean, pre-fired glass, smooth it flat to remove trapped water and air pockets, and let it dry fully before loading the kiln.

Can these decals be used with any COE glass?
Yes. Because they are applied to the surface of already-fused glass rather than fused as a compatible glass layer, they do not need to match your base glass COE. They are suitable across all COE systems.

Working Notes

These decals fire somewhat transparent on clear glass and show their strongest color on white or very light glass bases. On medium to darker glass, color definition diminishes noticeably, so choose your base color before designing your piece. Always apply decals to clean, pre-fired glass and allow the piece to dry fully before placing it in the kiln.

Suggested Firing Schedule (a starting point only, not a guarantee of results; every kiln fires differently, so test a small piece first and anneal for the thickness of your glass): Ventilate the kiln well up to 1000 degrees and fire slowly below 500 degrees. Ramp 50 degrees per hour to 185 degrees, hold 20 minutes. Ramp 150 degrees per hour to 300 degrees, hold 15 minutes. Ramp 250 degrees per hour to 500 degrees, hold 15 minutes. Ramp 600 degrees per hour to 1000 degrees, hold 10 minutes. Then ramp to a final 1275 to 1380 degrees, held about 10 minutes. These full-color prints read best on white or light glass and lose strength on medium to dark glass. Anneal for the thickness of your glass.
