The Small Dragonflies with Slumper mold from Colour de Verre casts two dragonfly shapes in a single firing: a small dragonfly at 3 inches (7.5 cm) and a large dragonfly at 4 inches (10 cm). Each cavity captures the wing structure and body detail of the insect in cast glass. The small cavity takes about 36 grams of glass and the large cavity takes about 50 grams.
The reverse side of the mold includes an integrated wing slumper. After casting the flat dragonfly shapes, the pieces can be re-fired face-down on the slumper side to add a gentle curve to the wings, giving the finished dragonfly a more lifelike, three-dimensional form. The cast and slump steps are built into the single mold.
Like all ceramic casting molds, this one is COE agnostic. Fill the cavities with frit or crushed glass and fire to shape. The mold is reusable across many firings when prepped and cared for properly. Colour de Verre molds require priming before every use.
What does the Small Dragonflies mold make? It casts two dragonfly shapes per firing: a small dragonfly at 3 inches and a large dragonfly at 4 inches. The reverse side of the mold can then be used to slump the cast pieces and curve the wings for a more three-dimensional finish.
How does the integrated wing slumper work? After casting, the flat dragonfly pieces are placed face-down on the reverse side of the same mold and re-fired at a lower slumping temperature. The curved surface bends the wings into a gentle arc, adding three-dimensional detail to the finished piece.
How much glass do I need per cavity? Colour de Verre lists about 36 grams for the small dragonfly cavity and about 50 grams for the large. Weigh your glass before loading and test a first run when the result matters.
What COE glass can I use in this mold? Any COE. Ceramic casting molds are COE agnostic, so the same mold works with COE96, COE90, or other fusible glass. Match your firing schedule to the glass you are using.
Does this mold need priming before use? Yes. Colour de Verre molds must be primed before every use. Apply a recommended primer and let it dry completely before loading glass into the cavities.

Working Notes
These are guidelines, not guarantees. Every kiln fires a little differently, so test a small run first when the result matters and follow the Colour de Verre project sheet for this mold.
Prime the mold cavities before every use. Colour de Verre recommends ZYP Boron Nitride Mold Primer or Hotline Primo Primer . Let the primer dry completely before loading glass.
Fill the small cavity with about 36 grams of frit or crushed glass and the large cavity with about 50 grams. Weigh your glass for consistent results.
The mold is COE agnostic. Use a full fuse casting schedule matched to your glass, adjusting the anneal soak temperature for your COE.
After casting, the flat dragonfly pieces can be slumped on the reverse side of the mold to add wing curvature. Fire the slump step at a lower temperature suited to your glass.
Let the kiln cool fully before removing cast pieces. Re-prime the mold before each subsequent firing.
Colour de Verre Suggested Firing Schedule
This is a suggested starting schedule based on Colour de Verre general guidelines, not a guarantee. Every kiln fires differently. Follow the project sheet for this mold and test a small run before committing to a full batch.
Heat no faster than about 350 F (195 C) per hour through the heating and fusing stages.
Fire to no more than about 1450 F (785 C) at the fuse peak.
Hold briefly at the peak temperature, then cool in a controlled ramp to the anneal soak temperature for your glass.
Hold at the anneal soak temperature long enough to equalize the glass, then ramp down slowly to room temperature.
