The Snowflake 17 December Mold from Colour de Verre is a reusable ceramic frit-casting mold that produces one bold, detailed snowflake per firing. The finished snowflake measures nearly 5.5 inches (14 cm) from tip to tip, making it well suited to holiday ornaments, winter window displays, and fused glass projects where a large, distinctive winter shape is needed. It is one of two Snowflake 17 designs in the Colour de Verre line.
The mold itself measures 7 by 6 by 1 inches (18 by 15 by 2.5 cm). Colour de Verre recommends filling the single cavity with 45 to 50 grams of frit. Like all ceramic casting molds, it is COE agnostic and works with any compatible fusible glass. The mold is reusable across many firings when primed and cared for properly between each use.
What does the Snowflake 17 December Mold make?
It casts one snowflake per firing, measuring nearly 5.5 inches (14 cm) across. The finished piece works well as a holiday ornament blank, a winter wall or window accent, or a component to incorporate into a larger fused glass work.
What COE glass can I use?
Any COE. Ceramic casting molds are COE agnostic, so the same mold works with COE96, COE90, or other compatible fusible glass. Match your firing schedule to the glass you are using.
How much glass do I need per firing?
Colour de Verre recommends 45 to 50 grams of frit per cavity. Weigh your glass before loading and test a first run when the result matters to you.
How do I prep the mold before casting?
Colour de Verre requires priming before every use. Apply ZYP BN Lubricoat or Hotline Primo Primer and let it dry completely before adding glass so the finished piece releases cleanly.

Working Notes
These are guidelines, not guarantees. Every kiln fires a little differently, so follow the Colour de Verre project sheet for this mold, test a small run first, and adjust from there.
- Prime the mold before every use. Colour de Verre calls for ZYP Boron Nitride Mold Primer or Hotline Primo Primer. Apply a thorough coat and let it dry completely before loading glass.
- Fill the cavity with 45 to 50 grams of frit. Fine frit and powder work well for a uniform fill that captures the snowflake detail.
- Firing temperature affects the surface character. A cooler fire gives a frosted, snowy look; a hotter fire gives a smoother, glassy finish. Adding dichroic flakes or frit to the fill creates additional surface variation.
- Let the kiln cool fully before removing the cast piece. Re-prime the mold before each subsequent firing.
Colour de Verre Suggested Firing Guidelines
This is a suggested starting point, not a guarantee. Every kiln fires differently. Follow the Colour de Verre project sheet for this mold, test a small run first, and adjust the schedule for your glass and kiln.
- Heat rate: no faster than about 350 F (195 C) per hour
- Maximum temperature: no more than about 1450 F (785 C)
- Surface finish: cooler temperatures give a frosted look; hotter temperatures give a smoother finish
- Fill weight: 45 to 50 grams of frit per cavity
- Anneal soak: about 950 F for COE96, about 900 F for COE90
