The Toad Casting Mold from Colour de Verre casts a single glass toad per firing, with the finished piece measuring approximately 2.5 inches by 3 inches (6.4 cm by 7.6 cm). The toad shape is a straightforward casting project suited to studio classes, demos for newcomers, and home kilnwork. The finished piece works as a paperweight, a shelf accent, or a tabletop art piece.
Fill the cavity with about 90 grams of frit, scrap glass, or sheet glass and fire to shape. Like all ceramic casting molds, it is COE agnostic, so the same mold works with COE96, COE90, or other fusible glass. Prime the mold before every use and match your firing schedule to the glass you are using. The mold is reusable across many firings when prepped and cared for properly.
What does the Toad mold make?
It casts one glass toad per firing, with the finished piece measuring approximately 2.5 inches by 3 inches (6.4 cm by 7.6 cm). The piece suits paperweights, shelf decor, and tabletop art accents.
What COE glass can I use in this mold?
Any COE. Ceramic casting molds are COE agnostic, so the same mold works with COE96, COE90, or other fusible glass. Match your firing schedule and anneal temperature to the glass you are using.
How much glass do I need?
Colour de Verre lists about 90 grams of frit, scrap glass, or sheet glass per cavity. Weigh your fill before loading and test a first run when the result matters.
How do I prep the mold before casting?
Prime the cavity with a mold release such as ZYP Boron Nitride Mold Primer or Hotline Primo Primer before every use, and let it dry completely before adding glass. Colour de Verre specifies this step for every firing, not just the first.

Working Notes
These are guidelines, not guarantees. Every kiln fires a little differently, so test a small run first when the result matters and follow a casting schedule suited to your glass and kiln.
- Prime the cavity before every use with ZYP Boron Nitride Mold Primer or Hotline Primo Primer, and let it dry completely before adding glass. Colour de Verre specifies priming before every firing, not just the first.
- Fill the cavity with about 90 grams of frit, scrap glass, or sheet glass. Weigh your fill before loading and test a first run before committing to a full batch.
- The mold is COE agnostic. Use a firing schedule matched to your glass and adjust the anneal soak temperature for your COE.
- Let the kiln cool fully before removing the cast piece. Re-coat the mold with primer as needed before the next firing.
Colour de Verre Suggested Firing Schedule
This is a suggested starting schedule based on Colour de Verre's general guidance, not a guarantee. Every kiln fires differently. Follow the project sheet for this mold, test a small run first, and adjust for your glass and kiln.
- Heat no faster than about 350 F (195 C) per hour during the heating phase.
- Fire to no more than about 1450 F (785 C).
- Follow with a controlled cool and an anneal soak at your glass's anneal point: about 950 F for COE96 or about 900 F for COE90.
