Two Color Large Butterflies Decal Sheet

This sheet carries four large butterfly and moth decals arranged in a two-by-two layout, printed in a two-color palette of gold and cobalt blue. The four forms vary: a broad, symmetrical butterfly with wide-spread wings, a fuller-bodied moth with a shorter wingspan, and two forms that fall between those in proportion. Each design carries bold striped and spotted wing patterning, with the cobalt blue and gold reading in strong graphic contrast. The gold areas have a bright metallic look.

These are water-slide decals made for kiln-fired glass work. You apply them to clean, pre-fired glass, fire them in a kiln, and the image bonds to the surface. Because the decal is applied on top of an already-fired piece rather than fused as a layer, no COE matching is required. To apply, soak the decal in room-temperature water for about 30 to 60 seconds until it slides freely from its backing paper, position it on dry clean pre-fired glass, smooth from the center outward to remove trapped water and air, let the piece dry completely, then fire using the schedule below.

Will these work with my glass?
Yes. COE matching is not a concern because you apply the decal to the surface of an already-fired piece rather than fusing it as a layer. These decals can be used on any pre-fired glass.

How many decals come on the sheet?
The sheet includes four decals, arranged two-by-two. The four designs share the same gold and cobalt blue palette but differ in wing shape and body proportion, giving you a coordinated variety for one project or four separate pieces.

How do I prepare my glass before applying a decal?
The glass must be pre-fired and completely clean. Oils, fingerprints, or kiln wash residue can prevent the decal from adhering. Wipe the piece with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry fully before soaking and placing the decal.

Can I trim the decals before applying?
Yes. Water-slide decals can be trimmed with sharp scissors before soaking. Cut close to the printed image to reduce the amount of clear carrier film visible on the finished piece after firing.

Working Notes

Apply decals to clean, grease-free pre-fired glass only. Soak each decal until it slides freely from its backing, then position it and smooth gently from the center outward to clear trapped water and air. Allow the piece to dry completely before loading the kiln. Ramping too fast or firing too hot can cause the decal to blister, wash out, or shift. If you are using these for the first time, start at the lower end of the range and adjust based on your results. The gold areas are metallic, so fire this print toward the lower end of the range to preserve density.

Suggested Firing Schedule (a suggested starting point, not a guarantee):
On fused glass this print fires to a final range of 1240 to 1370 degrees F, held about 10 minutes and kept toward the lower end to preserve density. Ventilate the kiln well up to 1000 degrees and fire slowly below 500 degrees.
50 degrees per hour to 185 degrees, hold 20 min.
150 degrees per hour to 300 degrees, hold 15 min.
250 degrees per hour to 500 degrees, hold 15 min.
600 degrees per hour to 1000 degrees, hold 10 min.
Then to 1240 to 1370 degrees, hold about 10 min.
Anneal for the thickness of your glass.
