The Wings Casting Mold from Colour de Verre casts one pair of ornamental wings per firing, with each wing measuring 5 inches (13 cm) long. Drawn from classic 16th-century Italian design, the wings work as standalone glass ornaments or as decorative elements in stained glass and mixed-media compositions.
The mold footprint is 7 inches by 7.75 inches with a depth of 1 inch (18 x 19 x 2.5 cm). Colour de Verre lists a fill of 40 grams of frit per cavity. As a ceramic frit-casting mold it is COE agnostic and reusable across many firings when prepped and cared for properly.
What does the Wings Casting Mold make?
It casts one pair of wings per firing, each wing 5 inches (13 cm) long. The wings work as standalone glass pieces or as decorative embellishments in mixed-media, stained glass, and fused glass projects.
How much glass do I need per cavity?
Colour de Verre lists 40 grams of frit per cavity. Weigh your glass and test a first run when the result matters, as fill weight can vary with how you load the cavity.
What COE glass works with this mold?
Any COE. Ceramic casting molds are COE agnostic, so the same mold works with COE96, COE90, or other fusible glass. Match your firing schedule to the glass you are using.
How do I prep the mold before casting?
Colour de Verre requires priming before every firing. Coat all cavities with a recommended mold primer and let it dry fully before adding glass.
How do I bring out more detail in the wing design?
Colour de Verre suggests dusting the mold cavities with black frit powder before filling with your main frit load. This technique highlights the fine lines of the wing casting.
Can I combine these wings with other Colour de Verre molds?
Yes. Colour de Verre suggests pairing the wings with their Cherub, Flaming Heart, or 3 Heart molds to create vintage-style compositions.

Working Notes
These are guidelines, not guarantees. Every kiln fires a little differently, so test a small run first when the result matters and follow a casting schedule suited to your glass and kiln.
- Prime all cavities before every firing. Colour de Verre specifically recommends ZYP Boron Nitride Mold Primer or Hotline Primo Primer. Let the primer dry fully before adding glass.
- For added surface detail, dust the mold cavities with black frit powder before filling with your main frit load. This highlights the fine lines in the wing design.
- Fill each cavity with about 40 grams of frit. Loose frit, crushed billets, or stacked sheet scrap all work.
- The mold is COE agnostic. Use a full fuse schedule matched to your glass COE.
- Let the kiln cool fully before removing cast pieces. Re-prime the mold before each subsequent firing.
Suggested Firing Schedule
This is a suggested starting point, not a guarantee. Every kiln fires differently. Follow the Colour de Verre project sheet for this mold and test a small run first before firing a full batch.
- Prime the mold before every firing and let it dry completely.
- Heat no faster than about 350 F (195 C) per hour through the heating stages to prevent thermal shock to the mold and glass.
- Fire to no more than about 1450 F (785 C) at full fuse.
- Add a controlled cool with an anneal soak suited to your glass: about 950 F for COE96 or about 900 F for COE90.
- Let the kiln reach room temperature before opening and removing cast pieces.
