Firing Instructions & Helpful Tips: Luminescent Etched Glass
These are guidelines, not guarantees. Each kiln and each handmade sheet behaves a little differently, so test a small piece first when the result matters.
- Cut on the non-etched (back) side. To cut on the etched (front) side instead, pre-fire etched-side-down to about 1350°F first.
- Do not cap with clear.
- For the first fuse, fire etched-side-down on fiber paper. Fired face-up the luminescent coating can burn off.
- It can be re-fired etched-side-up at a lower temperature (under 1400°F; we don't exceed 1250°F).

Q: What is etched luminescent glass?
A: It is a luminescent coating on the glass surface that gives a luminous, pearlescent rainbow shimmer in ordinary light. It is not glow in the dark. Selected areas of the coating have been etched away to leave the pattern; the remaining coating carries the rainbow shimmer, while the etched-through areas reveal the base glass beneath. The coating sits on one side only.
